The Most Common Sign of Infertility



Most experts say that a couple should not worry about not getting pregnant for about 12 months after starting to have regular unprotected intercourse. Statistics report that 80-85% of couples will get pregnant within the first twelve months. Of those who do not, 50% will get pregnant within 36 months of starting to try to get pregnant. If you have been trying for more than 36 months with no success, this is a sign of infertility. There are several potential causes of infertility. The woman may not be producing eggs regularly. This can be caused by an abnormal level of follicle stimulating hormone or other hormones produced by the pituitary gland that triggers the release of eggs from the ovaries. If these hormones are low, no eggs are released causing infertility. The causes of this disorder can be excessive physical or emotional stress, as well as very high or very low body weight. This condition will cause infrequent or completely absent menstrual cycles which is the sign of infertility.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is when a change occurs in the hypothalamus, ovary and/or pituitary gland. This results in an over production of male hormones that will prevent ovulation. When there is no ovulation, there can be no pregnancy. This is another sign of infertility as no menstrual cycle will take place. This can be caused by obesity. Luteal defect is when a woman's body fails to produce progesterone after ovulation. Progesterone is necessary for the uterus to prepare to allow the egg to be implanted. Another sign of infertility is lack of a menstrual cycle produced by a woman's autoimmune system attacking the ovarian tissue and preventing her from releasing eggs into the fallopian tubes.

If the woman has ever had abdominal surgery or an ectopic pregnancy (outside the uterus) this can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes which in turn can prevent the egg from reaching the uterus for fertilization. If the fallopian tubes are blocked for any other reason, this same thing will happen. Endometriosis can cause scarring of the uterus or female reproductive organs that can be a sign of infertility. Endometriosis typically causes severe abdominal pain so this is the sign of a problem. Many women have fibroid tumors in their uterus. If there is anything else growing in the uterus an egg will usually not implant in the wall of it at the same time.

Men can also be the cause of infertility. A low sperm count in men can make a couple infertile because not enough sperm get to the cervix to potentially fertilize the egg. A low sperm count can be caused by a number of different factors. It is best to check with you doctor to determine what the cause is. A sign of infertility due to a low sperm count could be a low sex drive.
